Horse riding and pony trekking

 

Ashford Outdoors operate an equestrian centre in the grounds of Ashford Castle where experienced instructors can cater for everyone from the most experienced riders to the complete novice. They also offer hacking trail riding on the nearby forest trails through 3,000 acres of beautiful mature woodland.

Alternatively you can go to the Atlantic Coast at Omey Island, near Clifden and go trekking along vast expanses of unspoilt beaches while the waves crash around your feet.

Fishing

Loughs Corrib and Mask offer world class brown trout fishing from the 15th of February to the 30th of September. Lough Corrib also offers the opportunity to fish for wild Atlantic Salmon with the peak grilse run being in June and July. Pike fishing is available on both lakes year round.

Philip is an experienced guide and can organise fishing trips on both lakes and provide all necessary tacle. Boat and engine hire can also be arranged by prior booking.

Salmon and sea trout fishing can also be arranged in the wider Connemara area by prior arrangement.

The costs for fishing trips on the lakes are: Half day trips for up to 3 people €100 • Day trips for up to 3 people €160 • Boat and engine day hire €70

Spinning rods and fly rods can also be hired.

Adventure sports

Ashford Outdoors offer an array of activities to suit all ages from their base on the Asford Estate. They offer a zip line adventure course, tree climbing, archery, bike hire and tours and kayaking. Falconry

You can fly a Harris Hawk in the grounds of Ashford Castle at Ireland’s School of Falconry. These exceptional birds will give you an experience you will never forget as they swoop down from a tree to land on your gloved hand. This is a very highly rated activity and you can experience your very own hawk walk by booking with them at: info@falconry.ie or by phone on 00353 94 46820. Advance booking is essential as the number of walks per day is limited!!

 

Foraging

Why not take a walk through the woods between Cong and Clonbur with an experienced forager and see what fruits, fungi and herbs that are available throughout the seasons. Learn how to safely avail of natures bounty and get advice on how best to use the natural foods on offer. Walks can be designed to suit everybodies individual needs. Cost: 2 hour foraging walk €60 • 4 hour foraging walk €100
